The St. Lawrence River Institute is a non-governmental organization established in 1994. Forming a unique partnership with government, education, business and the Mohawks of Akwasasne, the Institute is a leader in environmental research, education and community action.

Located in Cornwall, Ontario, the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences is a research leader on large river ecosystems in Canada and across the world. They offer scheduled education and community action programs for young children through young adults. The River Institute encourages people of all ages to get involved and excited about the environment through annual conferences, speaker series, summer camps, and open house events. As a learning and discovery center, the River Institute is a great stop if you are "In Quest of Nature".

What You'll See

  • The River Institute is made up of its in-house laboratories and its large outside laboratory – the St Lawrence River. An exhilarating day might be spent sampling and learning analytical techniques used by environmental scientists, or observing plant and animal life using nets, magnifying glasses and microscopes.
  • Spend a day with a biologist, assist with actual research programs on the river or in the lab by attending one of the Institute’s camps. Catch frogs, make volcanoes, create insect specimens or experience environmental biology first hand.

Please note: A visit to The River Institute or participation in one of its programs needs to be booked first. Please contact through the website listed above.
